There is a high demand for this genre in the casual market, their wide variety of themes and settings helping to satisfy a large number of people. Some free hidden object games are based on well know literary characters such as Hercule Poirot, Nancy Drew and Sherlock Holmes.
There is not a lot that the developers can do to improve the gameplay, except add some mini games or an inventory, so they have focused instead on the atmosphere of the game, storyline, and the audio and graphical quality. The mini games though, are often times very fun and a nice bonus when added to the gameplay.
Series of free hidden object games often come out and they are a nice way to have a narrative that spans multiple games. Hidden object game series include Mystery Case Files with games like: 13th Skull, Dire Grove, Huntsville, Madame Fate, Prime Suspects, Ravenhearst and Return to Ravenhearst. Mystery Case Files are great games in which you must solve varied mysterious cases.
In the “13th Skull” you find yourself in Louisiana, searching for Sara Lawson’s husband who was allegedly kidnapped by a vengeful pirate ghost seeking to protect his treasure. “Dire Grove” has you searching for a group of lost graduate students through a legendary Celtic grove. In “Huntsville,” you are tested to see if you are a real Master Detective, with over 15 crimes to solve and more than 20 locations to explore. “Madame Fate” has a very interesting premise. You must help Madame Fate, a carnival fortune teller, who has foreseen her own death. She suspects that one of the carnival folks might try to kill her. You are hired as a Master Detective to investigate and interrogate the carnies, and find who is attempting to murder Madame Fate before it’s too late. “Prime Suspects” is definitely one of the biggest games on this list. You must recover the stolen Queen’s Hope Diamond. There are 22 levels and 29 locations to explore in this game that will keep you occupied for days to come. Unlock the mysteries of the unsettling Ravenhearst Manor. As the Master Detective, you must search through Emma Ravenhearst’s diary for clues and ultimately find what is hidden in “Ravenhearst”. After you have freed Emma’s soul in the first game, she leaves you with a warning: there is still evil in Ravenhearst Manor. “Return to Ravenhearst” has you coming back to the cursed manor to take care of business once and for all. With 150 detailed scenes, these games are the biggest and most ambitious hidden object games to date, and it is practically a steal at the low price of 7 dollars.
